A bit late for this entry I guess considering the event was on November 1st but I’m sure the impact has lasted and the whole event is fresh in my mind. This was the first HSO event I was attending and I was totally ecstatic to see my friends perform. The event was being held to celebrate Diwali/Deepavali – the festival of lights. Deepavali is celebrated across India where people light up their houses with diyas(lamps) and families gather together to burst crackers. There is also a huge array of gifts, sweets being exchanged at this time.
The event started off with inauguration song, speeches by various dignitaries and the pooja (worshiping of goddess Lakshmi) commenced where the priest gave us an insight into what Deepavali signified and why it was celebrated. After the pooja, the cultural performances commenced leaving everyone in a trance. The wonderful classical dances, the western/contemporary medley, the Bhangra not limited to but including melodious singing, playing of instruments.
Gave a feeling of home to most and literally I could feel the nostalgia in the air. The performances ended with a bang and traditional Indian food including roti, curry, two types of rice including laddoos (sweet) were served. Made me miss home as well as gave me a part of what I would have experienced at home. All in all, the night ended with me leaving the place with a smile!
