Biography

Kallirroi Georgila is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Southern California (USC) and at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies. Before joining USC she was a Research Scientist at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, USA, and before that a Research Fellow at the School of Informatics of the University of Edinburgh, in the United Kingdom. Her research interests include all aspects of natural language dialogue processing with a focus on machine learning, particularly reinforcement learning of dialogue policies, speech recognition, and expressive conversational speech synthesis. She has chaired and served on the organizing, senior, and program committees of many conferences and workshops. She has also served as Vice President of SIGdial (the Special Interest Group on Discourse and Dialogue). Currently she is an Action Editor of the Computational Linguistics journal and an Associate Editor of the Dialogue and Discourse journal.

Research Summary

I work in the area of natural language dialogue processing. Natural language dialogue systems have recently attracted increased attention (see for example Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, Microsoft Cortana, and Google Assistant). The underlying goal of my research is to make natural language dialogue systems more human-like, robust to errors and misunderstandings, and adaptive to different types of human users. I am also interested in spoken language processing, multi-modal dialogue systems, reinforcement learning, and multi-agent systems.
