Itay Hen
Research Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Biography
Itay Hen holds a Research Associate Professor appointment in USC’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is also a Principal Scientist at USC’s Information Sciences Institute, where he leads the Computational Physics Group, and an adjunct Research Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Hen received his Ph.D. in particle physics from Tel Aviv University in 2009. Before joining USC, he held postdoctoral appointments at Georgetown University and UC Santa Cruz and was a member of the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at NASA Ames Research Center. His research lies at the intersection of quantum algorithms, computational many-body physics, and quantum benchmarking. He has led or co-led quantum-computing research programs supported by DARPA, DOE, NSF, and IARPA.Research Summary
My research interests cover two main areas: Quantum Computing and Computational Physics. In the quantum computing arena my research revolves around developing gate-based quantum simulation algorithms and studying the power as well as limitations of analog quantum computers (quantum annealers). My interests in computational physics are devising practical methods for studying the equilibrium (and to a certain extent also non-equilibrium) properties of strongly correlated quantum many-body systems.
