Research Summary

*
Dr. Massoud (Mike) Pirbazari has worked in advanced technologies for solving water quality problems. He has worked extensively on membrane technologies and membrane bioreactor processes for water treatment, water reclamation and reuse. He has conducted advanced research in two major areas: i) Integrated plant-sediment and microbial fuel cell technology for water reclamation and energy generation, and ii) Synthesizing foul-resistant polymeric membranes for water reclamation and reuse. His research efforts include membrane transport; membrane fouling; integrated biofilm and adsorption processes; advanced oxidation processes using free-radicals for the destruction of organic contaminants in water; and mathematical modeling, design and up-scaling of bio-physico-chemical processes in water treatment. His projects have been sponsored by the U.S.EPA, NSF, utilities, and industries. A recent NSF grant employs the microbial fuel cell concept for the removal of toxic metals and radionuclides from contaminated groundwater.
