Collaboration between physicians and engineers will usher in a new era of healthcare in which caregivers will rely on cost-effective wireless solutions to help patients and communities stay healthy. By capitalizing on the ever-expanding capacities of wireless networks and the increasing precision of sensors, engineers will be able to develop novel healthcare solutions.
From wearable sensors to ingestible pills that continuously transmit personal health data, technological breakthroughs will enable healthcare providers to monitor medication dosages and responses, as well as a patient’s caloric intake, activity, and sleep. Gaining such data remotely will allow clinicians to manage healthcare interventions without a patient visiting a hospital or clinic, which will lower the costs associated with healthcare and allow for nearly instantaneous treatment responses based on the vital patient data gathered.
The MS in Electrical Engineering – Wireless Health Technology (MSEE-WHT) is a new program offered by the University of Southern California that will transform approaches to treatment, diagnosis, and patient monitoring in the world of health-care. A partnership between the Keck School of Medicine and the Viterbi School of Engineering, this program provides students with the knowledge necessary to become innovators in applying wireless technology to meet the most pressing needs of today’s healthcare industry.
Technical expertise is acquired through rigorous electrical engineering course work in this two-year program. Additionally, students gain the critical advantage of a background in medical systems and care so that they better understand the needs and functions of healthcare providers, and the human body in relation to disease. Through a series of three medical courses that examine anatomy, physiology, and pathology, students learn the foundations of basic sciences, along with medical terminology and the progression of presenting symptoms of common chronic diseases. With required use of computer simulation techniques, anatomical modeling, and microscopes, MSEE-WHT students will be able to communicate from an informed perspective with the physicians and scientists who will benefit from their technical skill.
MSEE-WHT students also surpass mere theoretical applications of their learning by completing a 2-semester experiential learning course that exposes them to real-world environments in which innovative new technology is needed most. With guidance and instruction from experts of two disparate disciplines, MSEE-WHT graduates are equipped to revolutionize new ways to collect and transmit health data and to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective wireless health devices.

- A minimum of 30-31 units (depending on the course choice) is required for the MS in Electrical Engineering – Wireless Health Technology degree
- This program has required courses from both the Viterbi School of Engineering and the Keck School of Medicine, including an experiential learning internship course or directed research
- Required Courses: EE 450, 579, MEDS 530a, 530b, 530c, and 597a
- Other courses are electives from a suggested list of courses.
