Arianna Huffington speaking at Town & Gown about her new company, Thrive Global.

In the recent weeks, I found out about a new USC group within the Marshall School of Business that deals with “the science, best practices, and applied principles for high performance in any domain.” Called the Performance Science Institute, or USC PSI, the faculty and staff use neuroscience, psychology, and related research to quantify the role of emotion regulation in high-pressure scenarios and explain the importance of mindset in performance. Many of these traits and evidence can be seen in successful athletes; however, the same can be found in experts in all fields. USC PSI brought in Arianna Huffington, the founder of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Huffington Post and Thrive Global, to speak about the necessity of self-care and technology-free time.

Although many of the subjects she talked about is generally known – the importance of downtime, the addictive nature of technology and social media, the need to change poor company culture, it was incredible to hear that top executives were making huge steps to tackle these issues as well. Sacrificing health and personal relationships may sometimes seem like the only way to “work hard”, but this is an unsustainable way to produce high-quality results. Taking time to recharge and pursue other interests not only boosts self-esteem and happiness, but it also allows individuals to perform at a higher level, increasing productivity and successful outcomes. If you want to learn more about how Arianna Huffington is trying to reshape modern work-life balance with her new start-up, Thrive Global, check out the full interview here. Be sure to follow USC Performance Science Institute online to hear about their future events! I hear Kobe Bryant is coming in April!!
