Henry Salvatori Early Career Chair and Associate Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering

  • 2012, Doctoral Degree, Civil Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • 2007, Bachelor's Degree, Mechanical Engineering, University of Cambridge
  • 2007, Master's Degree, Mechanical Engineering, Cambridge University

Dr. Mitul Luhar joined the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at USC as Assistant Professor in January 2015. He was appointed the inaugural holder of the Henry Salvatori Early Career Chair in 2020 and promoted to Associate Professor in 2021. Prior to joining USC, Luhar was a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories at Caltech. He earned his Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT in 2012 and B.A. and M.Eng. degrees in Engineering from the University of Cambridge in 2007.

Research Summary

Dr. Luhar's research can be classified into two major themes:
(i) turbulent flows interacting with complex (e.g. rough, porous, compliant) surfaces, and
(ii) interaction between flow and flexible structures.
This work addresses open problems in aero- and hydrodynamic design, flow control, environmental science, as well as physical biology, and involves a combination of laboratory experiments and theory.
