How to Prepare for the Viterbi Career Fair

January 26, 2017

It’s that time of the semester again – Career Fair time!

WHAT?

The Viterbi Graduate Student Association (VGSA) is hosting an event where current graduate students and alumni will form a panel offering resume critiques and tips to prepare for the upcoming Viterbi Career Fair next week. Viterbi Career Services will also be there to explain all the resources students have available.

WHEN and WHERE?

Saturday Jan 28 2017 from 3-5pm in E-Quad, SGM 124 (3:30-4), and KAP Hall rooms (from 4pm onwards)

WHO?

All graduate students (Master’s or PhD) looking for jobs or internships should attend

WHY?

USC has amazing networking and career services but students have to be proactive about using these resources and being prepared to make the most of the opportunities provided. Thus, events like the VGSA Career Prep help students understand the scope of the fairs and what they need to do. Of course, career services goes far beyond just career fairs – it includes resume workshops, cover letter workshops, ways to interview and network effectively, how to navigate these processes as an international student, and much more. Students should start preparing at least a month in advance of the career fair to take advantage of what Viterbi offers.

USC has 2 career fairs relevant for Viterbi students, the Viterbi Career Fair and the general USC Career Fair usually held one week after the Viterbi one. The Viterbi Career Fair hosts close to a hundred (maybe more?) engineering companies looking to fill technical positions for full-time hires or interns or occasionally part-time or co-op opportunities. The USC Career Fair hosts even more companies but is meant for the entire university so engineering companies who recruit at that fair usually are looking to fill non-traditional engineering roles (I wouldn’t say they are necessarily non-technical) like sales, marketing, and other functions.

Thousands of students (both undergraduate and graduate) attend both fairs; in fact, it got so crowded that Viterbi even split the career fair into two separate events one semester but for Spring 2017, I believe there is just one Viterbi fair. Thus, preparation is key. Even if all you do to prep is attend the VGSA Prep Session, you’ll still have a better idea of what the fair is like and be ready to tackle the long lines! The Viterbi Career Fair is on Wed Feb 1, 2017.
