We did it! We pulled off another signature event this semester, and it’s only the start of February! When we met near the end of winter break with a few new executive board members, we were inspired to host a workshop to help our graduate engineering students prepare for career week. With important recruiting events like the Viterbi Career Fair, Viterbi Industry Networking Night, ASBME/GSBME Corporate Dinner happening this week and the next, we wanted our students to have the cleanest resumes and freshest elevator pitches. With a lot of last minute planning and emails back and forth, we were able to put together quite a nice schedule.

For the first half hour, students checked-in at the Engineering Quad and munched on free food (BBQ and dessert!) at the Epstein Family Plaza. Then, at a large lecture hall in SGM, Jenny Vazquez-Newsum, the Director of Viterbi Student Engagement & Career Connections (SECC), gave a concise and informative presentation about what one needs to do before, during, and after the career fair. She answered many questions about approaching recruiters, asking about sponsorships for international students, and accessing the Viterbi Career Gateway.

Afterwards, we had department-specific resume reviews in Kaprielien Hall featuring alumni in industry as well as other students who have already landed internships and full-time jobs. Overall, we had great feedback! I’m looking forward to making this a permanent event to get our student body ready for career week every semester!
