Both of my parents turned 50 this year, so my brother and I gave them crazy presents – mine was a hot air balloon ride for our entire extended family, and my brother’s was season tickets to the Hollywood Pantages Theatre! We get to watch 7 shows, including The Book of Mormon and even Hamilton!! Yeah we mostly got it for those two, but the other ones sounded pretty great as well. Our first was Hedwig and the Angry Inch, with Darren Criss (A Very Potter Musical, Glee) in the title role. I’ve gone to many Broadway shows prior to this, but this was the first time I watched one that broke the fourth wall. It was set up like a rock concert, with large speakers framing the stage and huge lights shining into the audience.

Heartbreaking and original, this play focuses on one of the most unique characters that I’ve seen on stage, a genderqueer rockstar named Hedwig Robinson. Throughout the show, she actively interacts with the audience and tells us the story of how she grew up in East Berlin and ended up in the US. She has a tumultuous past and an unhealthy relationship with her current love, and shares her secrets with us through song. Throughout the evening, she slowly breaks down but eventually accepts who and where she is in life. Without any intermission, Hedwig and the Angry Inch was an emotional blast – I can’t wait to see the other shows!
