On the last weekend of February and the first weekend of March, the Viterbi Graduate Student Association hosted the annual Viterbi Cup! This is a soccer tournament involving teams from all of the departments in the Viterbi School of Engineering. Because the student population in each department varies from 150 students (astronautical!) to over 1800 (computer science!), it was pretty difficult to split the number of interested players into major-specific teams, but our Vice President of Programs figured it out! Sorted into groups of 15, the student players represented all of the engineering departments: computer science (3 teams), biomedical engineering, aerospace and mechanical engineering (2 teams), chemical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, and civil engineering.

The tournament was held across 16 games in double-elimination play. Most of our senators were able to help out, distributing water and sports drinks and helping with player check-in. We also had many student volunteers for refereeing! In the end, one of the computer science teams came out on top. They’ve won three years in a row now and everybody is eager to knock them off the top next year. Until then, they’ll be playing against the dean’s team, led by our very own Dean Yortsos! The match will be held on Brittingham Field on Friday, April 7th from 1-2pm – see you there!!
