Is Coffee On An Empty Stomach Bad?

August 7, 2018

Dear Reader, welcome to my blog!

Coffee in the morning is a must for many of us! Especially when we have an exhausting day before and do not get to sleep as much as we need, it becomes a savior. Sometimes there is no time for breakfast and we just grab the coffee on our way. Apparently that is not the best thing to do to our stomach says an article on Curiosity.

According to the article, coffee increases the production of stomach acid and when you drink it on an empty stomach too often; it damages your stomach lining.   However, when there is food in your stomach it prevents the extra acid from being harmful to your system. Interestingly, the article says that the same goes for decaffeinated coffee too.

Apart from the stomach lining, coffee on an empty stomach “can give you jitters, shakes, and other withdrawal effects, including mood changes,” Dr. Adam Simon, the chief medical officer at PushDoctor.co.uk, told Express. Curiosity also mentions that it can also lead to an increase in your heart rate, symptoms of anxiety, difficulty in focusing as well as making you irritable.

Another interesting point from the article is that coffe may not always give us the wake up boost. This is beacuse it can cause the higher cortisol level we get when we wake up in the morning to backfire. They recommend going for coffee in the mid-morning when cortisol levels start to decline.

I am not sure if I can resist morning coffee but it is definitely a good thing to make sure to eat breakfast with it or before it! I hope you found this article useful and take good care of stomach.

Thank you for reading, see you in a future post!
