Heal the Bay – Coastal Cleanup Day

April 2, 2019

Coastal Cleanup Day, the world’s largest volunteer day to protect our environment organized by Heal the Bay is coming up on September 21, 2019. I had the pleasure to participate in the Coastal Cleanup Day 2018 in L.A. County as a volunteer and it was so much fun and rewarding. The event brought together 13,464 people who removed over 29.8 tons of ocean-bound trash from 78 cleanup sites in 3 hours. I was shocked by the amount of trash that was collected from the beaches.

Some of the types of beach trash that are often found: plastic, smoking-related, recyclables, medical and hygiene, fishing gear, drugs, e-waste, lost & found and shoes. It seems that we need to rapidly evolve our manner of thinking about product design, and ways to reuse and reduce the amount of non-recyclable and non-degradable items we consume, in order to combat rising ocean pollution.

Coastal Cleanup Day is one of 735 cleanups Heal the Bay hosts every year. Here is the event link if you would like to start getting involved locally: https://healthebay.org/event/coastal-cleanup-day-2019/
