Ali Wong at USC

February 19, 2020

Earlier this month, ALI WONG WAS ON OUR CAMPUS!! I have been lucky enough to attend one of her comedy shows; however, I was excited to hear about her personal life and experiences beyond stand-up.

For those of you who may be unfamiliar, Ali Wong blew up around four years ago when her Netflix special, Baby Cobra, dropped online. Throughout her career, she’s been featured as a guest on many sitcoms, wrote for Fresh Off the Boat, starred in the main cast of American Housewife, voiced the title character of Tuca & Bertie with Tiffany Haddish, and wrote a New York Times Bestseller Dear Girls. She’s a boss.

During her interview, Ali spoke a lot about her journey in finding her calling and experiences as a minority in the entertainment industry. It was interesting to hear her express that her main intention for anything she makes is to make people laugh. While the content she creates is from an unapologetically female and Asian perspective, she doesn’t feel like she is speaking on behalf of those populations and/or catering only to them. It was refreshing to hear her discuss her thoughts about these complex issues.

I’ve been very impressed at the speakers on campus this semester and am looking to seeing many more! Pete Buttigieg will be here tomorrow for anyone interested!!
