Exploring the Magic Castle

I finally got to visit The Magic Castle!! For those of you who didn’t grow up in Los Angeles, The Magic Castle is an exclusive club for magicians and magic lovers located in Hollywood right between the TCL Chinese Theatre and Yamashiro. One of my friends from undergrad had joined the Academy of Magical Arts as a teenager, so he recently converted his status into a full membership, which grants him access to the gorgeous Victorian home.

No pictures or videos were allowed inside since there were performances at every corner. In between getting drinks at one of the three bars inside, we enjoyed three different shows, each in a different theater: the Close-up Gallery, the Parlour of Prestidigitation, and the Palace of Mystery. I hadn’t seen a magic show since maybe high school, so it was a real treat to be in awe of some of the acts. I really did feel like a little kid again.

Since I came with a member, we didn’t have to do the full dining service (which is quite expensive), so we had a great burger at The Owl Bar. While there, we chatted with the bartender about all the famous magicians and celebrity hobbyists he’d seen, including Neil Patrick Harris, Steve Martin, and more. It was really incredible diving into this community for just a night. It truly is a clubhouse for both professional magicians and those who appreciate it.

If you ever get a chance to go, take it without hesitation! Dress to impress and you’ll surely have a great time. Hope to go again soon!!
