Academically there is no difference as online and on-campus are fully equivalent. On-campus and online students are enrolled in the same class, do the same homework, take the same exams and there is no differentiation on the transcript as to whether the course was taken as an online or on-campus student.

However, a semester taken as an online student, outside of the U.S. does not count toward CPT internship eligibility.

If you are an International student that selects the online option for Fall 2020, you will not be eligible to do a Summer 2021 CPT internship. You will be eligible to do a CPT internship starting in Spring semester, 2022. (Note: Under current SEVIS regulations, most Master's programs will receive a 1.5 year I-20. This means the program would end in Spring 2022 with no possibility of doing a full-time summer CPT internship. However, you would be eligible to do an OPT internship.)
