I am currently on an F-1 visa under Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and will transition to F-1 Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation. My OPT, along with the STEM extension, will allow me to work for a total of three years. During this period, I intend to apply for an H-1B visa to continue my employment in the U.S.
The 21st century leaders of the built environment, those who are involved in design, architecture, engineering and construction, must be able to manage and leverage the rapid pace of technological change. The program in Emerging Technologies in Construction is a multi-disciplinary program which aims to develop professionals to think holistically about design and engineering of sustainable cities, infrastructure, buildings, and systems of the future.
In this program, students will explore an integrative approach to design, engineering and construction technology, and in developing expertise in core topics including sustainability, data analysis and visualization, computing, modeling, simulation, process engineering and manufacturing, leadership, design and innovation. This program is designed for students with a passion for technologies and a passion to influence the design and engineering of the built environment. The curriculum will prepare this next generation of innovators to not only harness the power of technological innovation, but to bridge the industry’s fragmentation in order to foster collaboration, catalyze change, and offer advanced and sustainable solutions to global problems.
MSCE-ETC graduates will pave the way in design, engineering, construction, management and leadership roles in the built environment. Our graduates can expect to find roles in AECO firms, in technology firms, and in management consulting firms who focus on civil infrastructure, smart cites, buildings and technology. Our graduates will be encouraged and supported to be entrepreneurs and stewards of the built environment and to help solve many of its grand challenges.

Why did you choose to enroll in the Advanced Design & Construction Technology program at USC?
I chose to enroll in the ADCT program at USC because I was initially interested in construction management. I was always into the bigger picture of how different disciplines come together and the factors that contribute to the project’s overall success. Upon joining the program, it opened a new perspective and side I never really thought about in construction. Instead of simply learning how to control the project and its contributing technologies, I was inspired to propose new implementations of technologies to address issues in the AEC industry.
What has been a highlight/your favorite part about the Advanced Design & Construction Technology program so far?
My favorite part of the ADCT program is that it is not your conventional program that educates you about the standard practices in the construction industry; instead, it emphasizes the limitations and highlights the fragmentation of the industry. Through focusing on the four pillars of knowledge, the program prepares you for the future of the AEC industry to eventually move towards a sustainable built globe. The classes that are offered provides you the opportunity to expand your exposure to the emerging disruptions through interactive processes and real-life simulations.
Have you made any industry connections as a result of this program? If so, please describe.
Many industry connections have been made as a result of the program. One of my classes brings 2-3 guest speakers every class that are CEOs and founders of their own company. Through the guest speakers, valuable information was learned from their professional journey, personal experience and advice.
What excites you about this field of study?
The excitement of this field of study stems from the fact that I get challenged everyday in class. These challenges have not only allowed me to progress academically but personally too. It molded me with leadership qualities and an entrepreneurial mindset. It also provided me the tools and encouraged me to take a bigger stance on the industry’s fragmentation.
What would you say to someone considering this program?
For anyone considering this program, I would tell them to go for it because it has been one of my best decisions. You’ll leave with a growing hunger to play a role greater than yourself, one that you didn’t think you were capable of, and ultimately become an agent of change the industry needs today.
