Biography

Dr. Adam Simpson is an Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southern California. Dr. Simpson earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford in 2018 and 2022 respectively. Prior to earning his graduate degrees, he earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. After obtaining his PhD he became an IDEAL Provostial Fellow for studies in Race and Ethnicity at Stanford University, stationed in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department for the year 2022 to 2023.

Research Summary

Dr. Simpson’s research focusses on investigating chemical exposures to people through food and water. He hopes to use the knowledge gained from his bench-scale research to explore how community socioeconomics may interplay with levels of contaminant exposure that he measures in foods. He has interests in:

1) The transformation of food biomolecules and biopolymers by chemical disinfection and potentially toxic contaminants.
2) The formation of toxic contaminants caused by food processing techniques.
3) The detection of environmental contaminants in complex matrices including food and other materials such as soil.
4) Screening and prioritizing contaminants measured in food and other environmental materials using simple toxicity assays.
