Last week, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering’s Office of Graduate and Professional Programs (GAPP) officially hosted the orientations for both the incoming PhDs and Master’s students for this upcoming school year! Before the PhD group, I met our newest Viterbi Graduate Student Liaison (VGSL), Ghena Alhanaee. As the main point of contact between the student body and the Viterbi administration, Ghena will be planning some joint events with VGSA this year and representing Viterbi with me and the rest of the VGSA Executive Board as senators in the Graduate Student Government (GSG). During the orientation, we met most of the new PhD students and had the opportunity to speak to them over breakfast. Hopefully we can get a few of these newbies interested in joining our org!

The MS orientation was a lot more intense because there were so many more students in attendance. VGSA had a booth at the resource fair and we handed out desserts to everyone who successfully completed the ‘meet & greet’ activity assigned to them earlier. We had awesome treats ranging from lemon bars to brownie bites to vegan sun-butter cookies (whatever that means)! While everybody was waiting in line, we told them a little bit about the events we just recently planned for this semester and encouraged them to apply for the department senator positions. Elections are coming up soon, so if you’re interested in getting involved with student government, keep an eye out for the nomination form in your email inbox!
